The South African Mint – gold and silver coins

The South African Mint is one of Africa's most important mints and an internationally renowned coin producer. Based in Centurion, South Africa, the mint specialises in the production of circulation, bullion and collector coins.

The best-known product of The South African Mint is the Krugerrand – one of the world's most recognisable gold bullion coins. The mint's range also includes silver Krugerrands and collector series inspired by African wildlife, including the popular Big Five series.

History of The South African Mint

The history of South African coinage is linked to the discovery of gold in the Johannesburg area in 1886. The growing importance of gold mining created the need for a local mint. In 1890, the authorities of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek decided to establish a mint in Pretoria, where the first coins were struck on 6 July 1892.

One of the most important relics associated with the beginnings of the mint is the “Oom Paul” coining press, manufactured in 1891. More than 8 million coins were struck on the same press between 1892 and 1900. After the first mint was closed following the British occupation of Pretoria in 1900, a branch of the Royal Mint was opened in Pretoria in 1923. Among other coins, British sovereigns were produced there.

Another milestone came in 1967, when the first Krugerrand was struck at The South African Mint. In 1992, the mint moved its operations from Pretoria to a modern facility in Centurion.

Gold and silver coins from The South African Mint

The South African Mint is primarily associated with the gold Krugerrand, the first example of which was struck on 3 July 1967. The coin contains exactly one ounce of pure gold, while its total weight is higher due to the use of a gold and copper alloy. This gives the Krugerrand its characteristic reddish colour and greater resistance to scratches.

Gold Krugerrands are currently available in several popular weights, including 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. Special collector issues and Proof versions are also available.

Since 2017, the Krugerrand has also been produced in silver. The 1-ounce Silver Krugerrand is made of 999 fine silver and retains the characteristic appearance of the original gold coin – a portrait of Paul Kruger on the obverse and a springbok antelope on the reverse.

Interesting facts about The South African Mint

The Krugerrand was the first modern gold bullion coin whose value was not linked to a specified face value. This allowed its price to directly reflect the value of the gold it contained. The coin played a major role in the development of the modern investment gold market.

The name Krugerrand combines the surname of Paul Kruger with the name of the South African currency – the rand. The springbok depicted on the reverse refers to the national animal of South Africa.

The “Oom Paul” press holds a special place in the history of the mint. Among other issues, the first Krugerrand was struck on it in 1967, as were the first South African coins from subsequent series. The press survived two wars and was used at various locations for decades.

The mint's most important product remains the Krugerrand. Gold coins are available in various weights, meaning the series includes both the popular one-ounce coin and smaller fractional sizes.

Another important product group is the Silver Krugerrands, produced since 2017 from 999 fine silver.

The Big Five series is also highly popular among collectors and is dedicated to five of Africa's most characteristic animals: the lion, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard. In 2026, The South African Mint continues the Big Five III series, whose latest issue features the leopard.
