Big Five III Silver Coin Set: Buffalo 2 x 1 oz Silver 2026 Proof Doublecap is a collector’s issue produced by the South African Mint, part of the prestigious Big Five III series. The collection showcases the five most iconic animals of African wildlife – the elephant, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros, and leopard – collectively known as the “Big Five of Africa.”

Proof silver and limited mintage

The set contains two 1-ounce silver coins, each struck in .999 fine silver to the Proof standard. Each coin has a face value of 5 Rand and a diameter of 38.73 mm. The issue has a limited mintage, which further highlights its collector appeal.

The coins are housed in a Doublecap dual capsule, allowing them to be displayed side by side. The set comes in the original wooden presentation case and includes a numbered certificate of authenticity as well as a removable display plate.

The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of the most distinctive members of the Big Five. Its powerful build, massive horns, and unpredictable temperament make it a symbol of strength and the untamed nature of Africa.

Obverse and reverse of the Big Five III coins

The obverse features a full-body depiction of an adult African buffalo. The design is complemented by the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA,” “BIG FIVE 2026,” and the coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa.

The reverse shows the characteristic composition of two halves of a buffalo’s head. When the coins are placed side by side, they form a complete portrait of the animal. In the center are the inscriptions “FIVE RAND,” “1 OZ,” and “Ag 999.”
