The Perth Mint is one of the most recognizable mints in the world, specializing in the refining and production of precious metals. The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as the last of three Australian branches of the British Royal Mint. Its founding was linked to the Australian gold rush and the rapid growth of gold mining. Interesting facts about The Perth Mint
The Perth Mint has several remarkable achievements to its name. In 2011 it created the largest gold coin in the world – the Australian Kangaroo, weighing more than a tonne. Made from .9999 fine gold, the coin is about 80 cm in diameter and 12 cm thick, with a face value of 1 million Australian dollars. In 2012 it was entered into the Guinness Book of Records.
In 1957 employees of The Perth Mint achieved gold of almost 99.999% purity, which was an exceptional achievement in world refining at the time. The mint was also responsible for producing the gold medals for Australian athletes at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Scale of production
The Perth Mint is one of the largest precious metal processing companies in the world. Its refinery has a processing capacity exceeding 800 tonnes of gold and 1000 tonnes of silver per year.
In the 2024–2025 financial year, 225.4 tonnes of gold and 335.6 tonnes of silver were processed, totaling around 561 tonnes of precious metals. In the same period the mint sold more than 7.5 million minted collector coins, medallions and bars.
The Perth Mint also holds accreditations from the most important institutions operating in the precious metals market, including the LBMA, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Shanghai Gold Exchange, Osaka Exchange, and Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange.
