Krugerrand 1 once d'or 2023
The Krugerrand is currently one of the most famous and popular investment coins in the world. This bullion coin contains 1 ounce of gold (1 troy ounce) and is minted from 916 gold with a small admixture of copper (8.333%). This addition gives the gold Krugerrand a slightly reddish hue, and although it is minted from one ounce of gold, its weight is slightly higher (33.93 g). The history of the one-ounce gold Krugerrand The first gold Krugerrand in history was minted on July 3, 1967. Initially, 40,000 coins were produced annually. With each subsequent year, the volume of issuance gradually increased, and by the end of the 1970s, the circulation was already several million pieces. Initially, these investment coins were only available in one ounce of gold, but since 1980, Krugerrands weighing ½, ¼, and 1/10 ounce of gold have also been introduced. The coins are minted by the South African Rand Refinery. Each gold Krugerrand is guaranteed by the South African government as to its legality, purity, and origin. The coin is recognized in South Africa as a means of payment that has no monetary value – this is quite unusual, but it means nothing more and nothing less than that the South African Reserve Bank is obliged to buy back Krugerrands at the current price of gold. What does a Krugerrand (1 ounce of gold)? The name of this gold investment coin is a combination of the words “Kruger” and “rand.” The former refers to the surname, the latter to the name of the currency used in South Africa. This investment coin pays tribute to President Paul Kruger, whose diplomatic efforts enabled the Boers (farmers descended from European settlers) to win a bloodless victory over British domination. Kruger's term in office also coincided with the discovery of significant gold deposits. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of the aforementioned president, Paul Kruger. Above his image are the words “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.” The obverse of the gold Krugerrand was designed by Otto Schultz. The reverse side of the one-ounce gold Krugerrand features an image of a springbok antelope, which is the symbol of South Africa. On both sides of the image are numbers representing the year of minting. Below the image of the antelope is the inscription “Fyngoud 1oz fine gold,” confirming the content of 1 ounce of pure gold. The reverse side of the gold Krugerrand was designed by Coert Steynberg.Designer
