The Krugerrand is the most famous and appreciated investment coin in the world. This collector's coin was minted in 1/4 troy ounce weight, from 916 gold with a small admixture of copper. The addition of copper increases the coin's resistance to scratches and gives it a unique color. What's more, this unique specimen comes with a certificate of authenticity. Krugerrands are produced by the South African Rand Refinery. They are legal tender, guaranteed by the South African government in terms of legality, purity, and origin of the metal. Interestingly, although Krugerrands are legal tender, they have no monetary value. This means that the South African Reserve Bank is obliged to repurchase the coins at the current price of gold.

The obverse features a portrait of President Paul Kruger and the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.”

The reverse depicts a springbok, the symbol of South Africa. On either side of it are numbers representing the year of minting, and underneath is the inscription “Fyngoud 1/4oz fine gold,” indicating the pure gold content.
