Krugerrand 1/10 once d'or 2024
Gold coins bearing the image of a springbok antelope have been minted continuously since 1967. Initially, they were produced exclusively in one-ounce weights, but since 1980, Krugerrands weighing 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ounces of gold have been introduced. Interestingly, the name of the gold bullion coin comes from a combination of the words “Kruger” and “rand” - the name of the currency used in South Africa.
Krugerrands are produced by the South African Rand Refinery. They are legal tender, guaranteed by the South African government in terms of legality, purity and origin of the metal. Interestingly, although Krugerrands are legal tender, they have no monetary value. This means that the South African Reserve Bank is obliged to repurchase the coins at the current price of gold.
The obverse features a portrait of President Paul Kruger, above which are the words “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.” The obverse was designed by Otto Schultz.
The reverse depicts a springbok, the symbol of South Africa. On either side of it are numbers representing the year of minting, and below it is the inscription “Fyngoud 1/10oz fine gold,” indicating the pure gold content. The reverse was designed by Coert Steynberg.
