Silver Coin Perth Mint: Australia’s First Gold Rush 175th Anniversary Gilded 1 oz Silver 2026 Proof
Perth Mint Silver Coin: Australia’s First Gold Rush 175th Anniversary Gilded 1 oz Silver 2026 Proof is a commemorative issue marking the 175th anniversary of Australia’s first gold rush—an event that had a pivotal impact on the nation’s economic and social development.
The coin is struck in .9999 fine silver (Ag), weighing 1 troy ounce and measuring 40.90 mm in diameter, with a Proof finish. Selected design elements are gilded with 24-carat gold, underscoring the symbolism of the historic event. The issue carries a face value of 1 Australian dollar, with a maximum mintage of 5,000 coins.
The coin commemorates the 1851 discovery of gold at Ophir in New South Wales by Edward Hargraves, which sparked Australia’s first official gold rush. The event drew thousands of prospectors from around the world, contributing to the country’s rapid development, population growth, and the shaping of its multicultural identity.
Obverse features the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, along with the face value, weight and silver purity, and the issuing country’s name.
Reverse depicts a map of Australia marking Ophir—the birthplace of the first gold rush—and the number “175” symbolizing the anniversary. In the background are crossed mining tools—a shovel and pickaxe—as well as elements of gold seekers’ life such as a lantern, tent, wheelbarrow with paydirt, gold pan, bucket, and rocker box. Selected details, including the map, tools, and rim, are gilded. The design is completed by the inscription “AUSTRALIA’S FIRST GOLD RUSH,” the year of issue, and the Perth Mint “P” mintmark.
