Silver Coin Ice Age - Armadillo Colorized 42g Silver 2026 Proof

Ice Age Silver Coin – Glyptodon Colored 42 g Silver 2026 Proof is the fourth issue in the collectible Ice Age series, prepared by the Czech Mint. The coin is dedicated to the glyptodon – a prehistoric giant armadillo that inhabited South America during the Pleistocene epoch. The piece was struck from 42 g of pure Ag 999 silver in Proof quality, while selective coloring and enamel give the design exceptional depth and emphasize the nocturnal scenery of the composition.

Glyptodon was a distant relative of modern armadillos, but it far exceeded them in size. It reached up to 3.5 meters in length, about 1.5 meters in height, and weighed as much as 2 tons. Its body was covered by a massive shell composed of thousands of hexagonal bony plates, providing effective protection against predators. Its distinctive tail, ending in a massive bony club, was used both for defense and for combat between males. The species became extinct around 11 thousand years ago, due to climate change and human activity.

The coin was issued on behalf of Niue and has a face value of 5 New Zealand dollars (NZD). It was made of 42 g of Ag 999 silver, has a diameter of 50 mm, and was struck in Proof quality. The piece is delivered in a protective capsule and an elegant gray paper case together with a thematic brochure.

Obverse depicts an Ice Age scene, as well as the coat of arms of Niue, the face value of 5 DOLLARS, and the year of issue 2026. The design was created by Tereza Eisnerová.

Reverse shows a pair of prehistoric glyptodons in their natural environment. The background has been enhanced with blue coloring and enamel, giving the composition a nocturnal character. The reverse also features the Latin species name GLYPTODON. The reverse design was prepared by Tereza Eisnerová.
