Silver Coin Big Five III: Leopard 1 oz Silver 2026 (coin in card)
Big Five III Silver Coin: Leopard 1 oz Silver 2026 is the fourth release in the acclaimed Big Five III series produced by the South African Mint. The collection features the five most recognizable animals of African fauna — the elephant, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros, and leopard — known as the “African Big Five.” Coins in this series rank among the most sought-after contemporary collectible-bullion issues related to the continent’s wildlife.
The coin is struck in .999 fine silver (Ag), weighing 1 ounce with a diameter of 38.73 mm. The face value of 5 Rand confirms its status as legal tender of the Republic of South Africa. The issue has a limited mintage of 10,000 pieces and is delivered in the original card (blister card), which protects the coin and underscores its collectible nature.
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is among the most elegant and efficient predators in the world of big cats. Thanks to its strength, agility, and adaptability, it can thrive in highly diverse environments — from dense forests and savannas to the mountainous regions of Africa.
The obverse features a full-figure image of an adult leopard standing on a rock in an alert pose. The composition is complemented by the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA,” “BIG FIVE 2026,” and the coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa.
The reverse depicts two halves of a leopard’s head forming a composition that, when two coins are placed together, creates a complete portrait of the animal. At the center are the markings “FIVE RAND,” “1 OZ,” and “Ag 999.” An additional detail is the subtle image of the beetle Pachnoda sinuata, symbolizing the importance of ecological balance in African nature.
