The films were made in 2001, 2002, and 2003, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. The silver coins have been struck in pure Ag.999 bullion, weighing one troy ounce and measuring 40mm in diameter, in proof standard. The products feature gold-plated elements. The mintage of the set is 300 pieces. The Royal Dutch Mint, commissioned by the New Zealand Post, is responsible for the production of the coin.The obverses depict a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, designed by Ian Rank- Broadley.
