Polish Circulation Coins "Capercaillie" – set 1 gr – 5 zł 2008 includes coins with denominations from 1 grosz to 5 złotych, minted in 2008. The series refers to Polish history and tradition, and this set is inspired by the bird species – the capercaillie, which is a symbol of Poland's forest fauna.
The 1, 2, and 5 groszy coins are made of manganese brass (MM59), the 10, 20, and 50 groszy coins and the 1 złoty coin are made of cupronickel (MN25), while the 2 and 5 złote coins consist of cupronickel (core of the 2 złote coin and ring of the 5 złote coin) and tombac (core of the 5 złote coin and ring of the 2 złote coin).
The coin edges vary depending on the denomination: 1 grosz, 20 groszy, and 50 groszy have reeded edges; 2 grosze and 2 złote have smooth edges; 5 groszy, 10 groszy, and 1 złoty have alternating smooth and reeded edges. The 5 złotych coin features an irregularly patterned edge.
The set includes coins with denominations 5 zł, 2 zł, 1 zł, 50 groszy, 20 groszy, 10 groszy, 5 groszy, 2 grosze, and 1 grosz. In order from the highest denomination, the coins have the following weight and diameter: 6.54 g and 24 mm, 5.21 g and 21.5 mm, 5 g and 23 mm, 3.94 g and 20.5 mm, 3.22 g and 18.5 mm, 2.51 g and 16.5 mm, 2.59 g and 19.5 mm, 2.13 g and 17.5 mm, 1.64 g and 15.5 mm.
Obverse features the image of the Polish Eagle from the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Poland, with the inscription “RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA” above in a semicircle. The year of issue is placed at the bottom of the obverse.
Reverse shows the denomination of the coin and the name of the currency unit.
