The films were made in 2001, 2002, and 2003, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. The product depicts the nine characters featured in the film. The silver coin was struck in pure Ag.999 bullion, weighing 5 troy ounces and with a diameter of 65mm, in proof standard. The mintage of the coin is 20,000 pieces. The Royal Dutch Mint, commissioned by the New Zealand Post, is responsible for the production of the coin.The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, designed by Ian Rank- Broadley.
