Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Various Years
The Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold coin is one of the most recognized and respected investment coins worldwide. Struck in 916 gold with an alloy of copper (8.333%), it offers enhanced durability against scratches and its characteristic warm hue. Each coin contains 1/2 oz of pure 24-carat gold, with a total weight of over 15.5 g.
The Krugerrand has been in continuous production since 1967. Initially available only in a one-ounce version, smaller denominations of 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 oz gold were introduced in 1980. The coin’s name derives from President Paul Kruger and South Africa’s currency – the rand.
The coins are minted by Rand Refinery and are considered legal tender, guaranteed by the South African government. Although they do not bear a face value in rand, their worth corresponds to the current gold price, with the South African Reserve Bank committed to repurchasing them.
Obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic, with the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.”
Reverse depicts a springbok antelope – the symbol of South Africa. The year of issue appears on both sides, with the inscription “Fyngoud 1/2 oz fine gold” at the bottom, indicating the pure gold content.
