Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold 2009
The Krugerrand, the most well-known and esteemed investment coin in the world. This gold bullion coin is minted from 916 gold with a small addition of copper (8.333%). The addition of copper increases the coin’s resistance to scratches and gives it a unique color. It is worth noting that the gold Krugerrand contains 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold, and its total weight exceeds 15.5 g.
Gold coins featuring the image of the springbok antelope have been minted continuously since 1967. Initially, they were produced exclusively in the weight of one ounce, but since 1980, Krugerrands have also been available in weights of 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ounces of gold. Interestingly, the name of this gold bullion coin is a combination of the words "Kruger" and "rand" – the name of South Africa’s currency.
Krugerrands are produced by the South African Mint in cooperation with Rand Refinery. They are legal tender, guaranteed by the government of South Africa in terms of legality, metal purity, and origin. Interestingly, although Krugerrands are considered legal tender, they do not have a monetary face value. This means that the South African Reserve Bank is obligated to repurchase the coins at the prevailing gold price.
Obverse: Features a portrait of President Paul Kruger, with the inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA" above.
