Germania Mint: Megafauna – Cave Lion 1 oz Gold 2026
Germania Mint: Megafauna – Cave Lion is the first gold coin of the new Megafauna series, transporting collectors to a time when prehistoric predators dominated the world. The 2026 issue pays tribute to the cave lion, a powerful hunter that roamed the ice-covered plains of Europe and Asia thousands of years ago. The coin is struck from 1 oz of 999.9 fine gold and combines historical narrative with the modern minting craftsmanship of Germania Mint.
The design by Kinga Sabatowicz is a deliberate fusion of nature and archaeology. Its raw aesthetic emphasises strength, instinct and the brutality of the world before the age of humankind. The issue was prepared for the Republic of Liberia as legal tender with a face value of 500 dollars. The mintage is strictly limited to 500 pieces, each delivered in dedicated Safepack packaging that highlights the coin’s collector character.
The coin is struck in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality, has a diameter of 32.00 mm, and represents the opening chapter of a series that will introduce other extinct megafauna species in future releases. It is a proposition for collectors seeking short series, strong symbolism and high-fineness gold.
The obverse depicts the cave lion in its natural, primal environment. Tensed muscles, exposed fangs and claws are captured in the moment just before the leap, set against mountains and ancient forests, conveying the drama of the struggle for survival.
The reverse presents a new Germania Mint motif: the skull of a cave lion and its paw print, surrounded by tracks of other species to appear in subsequent Megafauna issues. The composition is completed by the coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia and the Germania Mint mintmark.
