The Duchess of Hamilton £2 Gold 2026 Proof Coin is a prestigious collector’s issue produced by The Royal Mint, commemorating one of the most iconic locomotives in the history of British railways.
Duchess of Hamilton was built in 1938 at the Crewe Works for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). The locomotive was designed to operate the most prestigious express services between London and Glasgow. Thanks to its streamlined silhouette and distinctive Art Deco-style lining, it became a symbol of the golden age of British railways, combining elegance, modernity, and impressive performance.
The coin was struck in Au.916.7 gold, with a weight of 15.98 g and a diameter of 28.40 mm. The numismatic piece has a face value of 2 pounds sterling and has been produced in the highest minting standard, Proof. The coin’s construction features two shades of gold – yellow gold in the inner section and red gold in the outer ring.
The obverse features the official effigy of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, along with the face value.
The reverse, designed by Gary Breeze, depicts the Duchess of Hamilton locomotive in a dynamic side profile. The design captures the locomotive’s distinctive streamlined form, emphasizing its speed, elegance, and importance in the history of British rail transport.
This is the first official British coin dedicated to the Duchess of Hamilton locomotive. The issue is a tribute to one of the most famous symbols of British engineering and the golden age of railways.
