Canadian Maple Leaf – Twin Maples 2 oz Silver Various Years
Canadian Maple Leaf – Twin Maples 2 oz Silver is an interesting variation of one of the world’s most recognisable bullion series, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. The coin stands out not only for its increased weight of 2 troy ounces, but also for its distinctive reverse design, which departs from the classic single maple leaf motif.
The standard Maple Leaf series takes its name from the iconic maple leaf design by Walter Ott, which has become one of Canada’s most important national symbols. In reality, however, the national symbol encompasses many maple species. This inspiration led to the creation of the Twin Maples issue, featuring two sugar maple leaves (Acer saccharum), a species particularly closely associated with Canadian national identity.
The coin is struck from pure silver of Ag 9999 fineness, carries a face value of 10 Canadian dollars, and has the status of legal tender in Canada. Its diameter is 38 mm, and the reeded edge emphasises its classic mint character. Coins are offered in various years, selected at random from available stock.
As expected from Royal Canadian Mint products, the coin is equipped with advanced anti-counterfeiting features. These include radial lines in the background, a micro-engraved miniature maple leaf bearing the year, and Bullion DNA technology, which allows authenticity verification in the mint’s database using specialised scanners.
The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt. The surrounding inscriptions include the monarch’s name, the Latin title D.G. REGINA, and the face value 10 DOLLARS.
The reverse, designed by Celia Godkin, depicts two sugar maple leaves, from which the Twin Maples issue takes its name. Along the rim are inscriptions indicating the fineness, metal, and weight in English and French: 9999 FINE SILVER 2 OZ ARGENT PUR 9999.
