The Kermode is a special color variant of the black bear found only in the coastal forests of British Columbia. About 10% of this population has white fur, while retaining dark eyes, paws, and snout. This lighter coat makes them less visible against the sky, improving their success in fishing. The coin captures such a moment – a bear catching a fish from the water.
