Canada: Animal Portraits – Great Horned Owl 3/4 oz Silver 2021
The 2021 3/4 oz Silver Canadian Great Horned Owl is a silver coin from the prestigious Animal Portrait series, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. This series debuted in 2017 and has since annually featured one animal representing Canadian wildlife. The 2021 edition features a bird for the first time – the powerful Great Horned Owl, also known as the tiger owl or hoot owl, symbolizing strength, vigilance, and masterful hunting skills.
The coin is struck from .9999 fine silver and has a face value of 2 Canadian dollars, guaranteed by the Government of Canada. It has a diameter of 38 mm and a weight of 3/4 troy ounce.
Obverse shows a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. It is the fourth official portrait of the monarch on Canadian coins and the first without a crown since the 1930s. The coin’s face value is also shown on the obverse.
Reverse depicts the Great Horned Owl with its characteristic piercing gaze, symbolizing its role as a silent and precise predator. The design was created by Denis Mayer Jr., and around the owl image are inscriptions indicating the year of issue, weight, silver purity, and the issuer.
