The Austrian Gold Ducat is a coin distinguished above all by its high pure gold content (3.44 g) – it weighs 3.49 g and has a diameter of 19.75 mm. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, making it easy to recognize even for those new to the world of precious metals and investment bullion coins. Although the current form of the ducat was introduced at the end of the 19th century, ducats – both gold and silver – had been present on the European payment market much earlier.
History of the 1915 Gold Ducat
Ducats are coins that appeared in Europe as early as the late Middle Ages, and their name derives from the Latin word “ducatus,” meaning “duchy.” Initially, they were regarded as coins associated with Italian duchies and referred to gold florins. For centuries, they served as a means of payment in Europe until their withdrawal in 1857, although Austrian Ducats remained in circulation as trade coins until 1915.

The production of the first Austrian Ducats began in the 16th century, but their minting was halted at the outbreak of World War I. Despite this, they are still issued today in the form of so-called “restrikes,” with the date 1915 appearing on all specimens. The most famous version of this coin is the Ducat featuring Franz Joseph, which first appeared in 1872.
Franz Joseph I, born in 1830 at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, was Emperor of Austria for nearly 70 years. Thanks to his reign, Austria-Hungary became one of the most important states in Europe, and he himself was commemorated both through ducats and through the rebuilt capital of the monarchy – Vienna.

The Austrian Gold Ducat is produced by the renowned Austrian Mint. The coin stands out with the following features:
- Obverse: Portrait of Franz Joseph I and the inscription “Franciscvs Iosephvs IDG Austriae Imperator”.
- Reverse: The double-headed Habsburg eagle with coat of arms and the inscription “HVNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX AA” along with the date 1915, commemorating the year of the last official issue of ducats.
