$2 banknote 1 ounce of copper
$2 Banknote 1 oz Copper is a medal inspired by a rare issue of the American $2 banknote from the late 19th century, known for its exceptional symbolism and distinctive graphic layout. The design, used only in a few year classes, is highly regarded among collectors today. It has been recreated on a disc in 1 ounce of .999 fine copper, preserving the characteristic linework and rich details typical of the era.
The banknote that served as the model was nicknamed "mini-portals" due to the way George Washington is depicted, as if looking out of a ship's porthole. It is the only instance in history where his likeness appeared on the $2 denomination, which further enhances the collectible appeal of this motif. The composition combines elements representing mechanics and agriculture, emphasizing the symbolism of labor as the foundation of the young nation’s development.
Obverse: At the center is a portrait of George Washington set within a decorative frame that gives the impression of a "window" he is looking out from. On the left is a seated man symbolizing mechanics, on the right a woman representing agriculture. Around them are numerous denomination markings and the inscriptions "TWO SILVER DOLLARS," "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "SILVER CERTIFICATE."
Reverse: The composition features the inscriptions "2 DOLLARS," "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and text referring to the authenticity of the original model. At the top is the metal fineness information "1 OZ 999 FINE COPPER."
