The obverse of the coin features the image of King Charles III. The obverse also includes information about the date of issue, the country of issue, the weight, and the purity of the metal. The obverse was designed by Stephen J. Fuller.
The reverse depicts a colored form of the taniwha, a mythical creature from Maori tradition that may inhabit caves. The reverse also features the inscription “TANIHWA.” The reverse was designed by Dave Burke, Tauranga.
