Celebrating the Life and Work of JRR Tolkien £2 Copper-Nickel 2023 commemorates the eminent scholar and philologist, creator of Middle-earth and father of modern fantasy - JRR Tolkien. He is best known for his popular fantasy novels The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-55). The coin is minted from a copper-nickel alloy, weighs 12 grams, and has a diameter of 28.4 mm. The mintage of the coin is unlimited. In addition, this extraordinary specimen was produced by The Royal Mint. The coin is guaranteed by the British government as to its legality, purity, and origin of the metal, and is legal tender in the country of issue. The obverse features the likeness of King Charles III of Great Britain, the denomination, and the year, designed by Martin Jennings. The reverse of the coin features Tolkien's monogram. The reverse also bears the inscriptions “WRITER POET SCHOLAR” and “1892 JRR TOLKIEN 1973.” The reverse was designed by David Lawrence.Designer
