The Ukraine 50 Hryvnias (50 UAH) circulated banknote is an important part of the Ukrainian currency, commonly used in circulation. Issued by the National Bank of Ukraine, this banknote combines aesthetics and functionality, serving both as a means of payment and an interesting collectible item. The 136 × 72 mm banknote pays tribute to his contribution to the development of Ukraine’s history and the building of its national identity.
On the obverse of the banknote is a portrait of Mykhailo Hrushevsky (1866–1934), the author of fundamental historical works that had a decisive impact on shaping Ukrainian national consciousness. As the first President of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, Hrushevsky played a key role in Ukraine’s pursuit of independence.
On the reverse of the banknote is an illustration of the Building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv, which Hrushevsky helped to establish and led. The Academy became one of Ukraine’s most important scientific and intellectual centers, and its activities were of great significance in the process of national revival.
To protect against counterfeiting, the 50-hryvnia banknote features the following security elements:
Watermark with the portrait of Mykhailo Hrushevsky and the numerical denomination “₴50,” visible when held up to the light.
Security thread, visible in the light, with the microtext “₴50.”
Tilt effect – the denomination “50” changes color depending on the viewing angle.
Optically variable ink – certain elements of the banknote change color from purple to green.
Tactile elements, including Hrushevsky’s portrait, the denomination, and markings for the visually impaired.
Differences between series:
- Series 2 features classic security elements and traditional color scheme.
- Series 3 adds an enhanced tilt effect and clearer microtext, making the banknote more difficult to counterfeit.
- Series 4 introduces additional optically variable ink and refined graphic elements, providing a higher level of protection against counterfeiting.
