Wonders of Australia: The Outback 1 oz Silver 2026 Opal Proof
Wonders of Australia: The Outback is a striking silver collector coin featuring an opal insert, struck from 1 oz of pure 9999 silver and issued in 2026 by The Perth Mint. The release forms part of the esteemed “Wonders of Australia” series, showcasing the most iconic landscapes and natural richness of the Australian continent.
The Australian outback is a region of immense scale and raw beauty, encompassing deserts, canyons, rock formations and remote areas inhabited by hundreds of thousands of animal species. Many of these species are found exclusively in Australia, making the region one of the most valuable ecosystems in the world. The coin’s design reflects this extraordinary diversity through a rich, symbolic composition.
The central design element is a round insert made of natural opal, Australia’s national gemstone. In Indigenous Dreamtime beliefs, opal was formed where the rainbow touched the earth and is still often referred to as the “fire of the desert”. Its unique play of colours gives the coin a distinctive and luxurious character.
The coin is struck in the Proof standard and has a face value of 1 Australian dollar, a diameter of 36.6 mm and a weight of 31.107 g. The combination of classic Proof finish with the opal feature creates an impressive whole with strong collector appeal. The mintage is strictly limited to 5,000 pieces, underlining its exclusivity.
The obverse of the coin depicts the official effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, together with the issuing country, face value and issuing details, presented in an elegant, classical style.
The reverse, designed by Jennifer McKenna, showcases an elaborate composition of Australian fauna and landscape, including a dingo, python, bilby, emu, wallaby and other characteristic species, arranged around the opal insert. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s P mintmark, the weight, silver fineness and the year of issue 2026.
