Trade Dollar 1 Ounce Copper
The Trade Dollar 1 Ounce Copper is an exceptional collector’s medal inspired by the classic design of the American Trade Dollar from the late 19th century. Made from .999 pure copper and weighing one troy ounce, it pays tribute to the era when the United States strengthened its economic position on the international stage. Its elegant appearance and historical references make it a must-have piece for any collector of American numismatics.
The original Trade Dollar was created in 1873 by the United States Mint to facilitate trade with China, converting American silver into coins used in international commerce. The design by William Barber was acclaimed for its symbolism and elegance. These coins circulated until 1878, and for several years thereafter were issued in proof format until 1883. The modern copper version preserves the spirit of the original, combining tradition with contemporary minting artistry.
The medal was produced in the United States from the highest purity copper (.999), weighs one troy ounce, and has a diameter of 39.3 mm. It is an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate classic motifs of American coinage.
Obverse depicts the seated figure of Lady Liberty holding an olive branch – a symbol of peace and friendship – over the calm sea, referencing the coin’s original purpose of trade with China. In her other hand she holds a ribbon inscribed “LIBERTY”. At the base is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and the composition is surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original U.S. colonies.
Reverse features a heraldic shield with “USA” and three stars, which may represent the three branches of government in the U.S. political system. Behind the shield are outstretched eagle wings, and in the background a waving U.S. flag. The edge bears the inscriptions “COPPER .999 FINE” at the top and “ONE AVDP OUNCE” at the bottom.
The coin is not legal tender and serves solely as a collector’s item. It is packaged in a plastic sleeve or protective pouch, which preserves its surface, facilitates storage, and helps maintain its aesthetic value for many years.
