The Royal Mint: The Angel £5 Cupronickel 2026 is a contemporary rendition of one of the most iconic motifs in the history of British numismatics. “Angel” coins, first issued in the 15th century during the reign of Edward IV, quickly became symbols of divine care and protection. The image depicting Archangel Michael vanquishing the dragon was for centuries regarded as a talisman — these coins were used in healing ceremonies and later worn as amulets to ward off misfortune.

The 2026 edition continues this tradition, presenting the classic motif in a modern interpretation. The reverse, designed by Sandra Deiana, shows a dynamic scene of Archangel Michael’s victory over the dragon — detailed, full of movement and narrative expression. The issue has been struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated standard in cupronickel, preserving an impressive rendering of the details and the historical character of the original.

The obverse features a portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, in line with the official iconography of British coinage in 2026. The £5 denomination and the elegant arrangement of inscriptions emphasize the official nature of the issue.

The coin has a diameter of 38.61 mm and a weight of 28.28 g, which is typical for contemporary five-pound numismatic pieces from The Royal Mint made of cupronickel. It is an attractive choice both for collectors of historical themes and for those interested in the iconic “Angel” motif, long associated with the symbolism of protection and good fortune.

Obverse: portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, denomination £5 and year of issue 2026.

Reverse: a contemporary interpretation of the scene in which Archangel Michael defeats the dragon, by Sandra Deiana — a dynamic composition referencing historical “Angel” coins.
