Superman 1 Ounce Silver 2016

Since his first appearance in 1938, millions of readers and movie-goers have been captivated by the adventures of Clark Kent and his secret identity as Superman. As an infant Kal-El, he was sent to Earth from the grim planet Krypton and was found by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who raised him as their son. They instilled in him strong values and beliefs that he should use his superhuman abilities for the greater good.

The Royal Canadian Mint was officially opened in 1908 by Governor General Earl Grey, minting the first fifty-cent coin produced on Canadian soil. After the coin began to be issued, the only competitor was the South African Krugerrand, but due to the apartheid boycott, it was not widely available. This made gold coins with a maple leaf very popular.

Silver is mainly used as a precious metal. Sterling silver alloyed with copper is used for jewelry, dishes and cutlery. It is also used to make medals. High-end musical instruments, such as flutes, are made from this alloy. Silver is a very malleable and forgeable (slightly harder than gold) monovalent metal of group 11, with a shiny luster that can be easily polished.

The obverse side bears the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination ($5).
