Silver Coin Animals of the World – Harbour Porpoise 20 zloty Silver 2004 Proof is a collector issue of the National Bank of Poland belonging to the renowned “Animals of the World” series, showcasing diverse fauna species from across the globe. This program combines educational and natural-history value with high-quality numismatic craftsmanship.

The coin was struck in .925 fine silver (Ag), with a weight of 28.28 g and a diameter of 38.61 mm. It has a face value of 20 zloty, a smooth edge, and was produced in Proof quality (mirror finish), characterized by a contrast between the mirrored field and the matte relief. The mintage was 56,000 pieces.

The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is a small marine mammal from the porpoise family, found in the cold and temperate waters of the Northern Hemisphere, including the Baltic Sea. The species is characterized by a compact build, small size, and a triangular dorsal fin. Porpoises are shy and difficult to observe—they rarely leap above the water’s surface, unlike dolphins. They use echolocation, which enables them to navigate their environment and hunt effectively.

Due to human activity, including environmental pollution and bycatch in fishing nets, porpoise populations—especially in the Baltic Sea—are seriously threatened. In Poland, this species is strictly protected, and its presence is an important indicator of the health of marine ecosystems. The coin’s issue serves as a reminder of the need to protect these exceptional animals and their natural habitat.

Obverse features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Poland, the inscription “RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA,” the year of issue, and the face value.

Reverse shows an image of two porpoises in their natural environment. At the top is the inscription “Morświn,” and below is the species name “Phocoena phocoena.”
