The 2026 Sable Island Horses 1 oz Silver Proof Coin is a collector issue produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, dedicated to one of the most recognizable symbols of Canada’s wildlife. The coin commemorates the horses living on Sable Island – a small sandy island located off the coast of Nova Scotia, where they have lived in near-complete isolation from humans for almost three centuries.

The horses of Sable Island have adapted to harsh natural conditions, becoming a symbol of endurance, independence, and survival. In 1961, following numerous public protests against plans to remove the animals from the island, they were placed under federal protection, ensuring their continued freedom in the wild. The 2026 issue recalls this remarkable story and pays tribute to one of the most distinctive elements of Canada’s natural heritage.

The coin was struck from 1 ounce of .9999 fine silver in Proof quality. It has a diameter of 38 mm and a face value of 20 Canadian dollars. The mintage is limited to 7,000 pieces worldwide. The reverse design was created based on the photograph “The Stallion and the Sea,” taken by equine photographer Sandy Sharkey during her visit to Sable Island in 2014.

Obverse features the effigy of King Charles III designed by Steven Rosati, along with the issuing country, face value, and year of issue.
