Prehistoric Life – Plateosaurus 1 oz Silver Coin 2026 is the first release in the Prehistoric Life series, dedicated to the fascinating world of prehistoric reptiles. The star of this issue is the Plateosaurus – one of the earliest large herbivorous dinosaurs, which lived at the end of the Triassic period approximately 214–204 million years ago. The coin was struck from 1 ounce of pure Ag 9999 silver in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, with a worldwide mintage of 10,000 pieces.
Plateosaurus belonged to the group of sauropodomorphs, the ancestors of the largest dinosaurs ever to inhabit the Earth. It grew up to 10 metres in length and moved mainly on two legs, although when necessary it could also support itself with its forelimbs. Thanks to its long neck, it could easily reach vegetation, and its numerous fossils discovered in Europe have allowed scientists to gain detailed knowledge of the anatomy and lifestyle of one of the most important representatives of the Late Triassic.
The coin was issued by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has a face value of 20 Francs, a diameter of 38.6 mm, and was struck from 1 ounce of Ag 9999 silver. The issue was produced in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, making the design impressive for its high standard of craftsmanship and carefully rendered details.
Obverse: features the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The design also includes information on the coin’s weight, silver purity, and face value of 20 Francs.
Reverse: depicts a majestic Plateosaurus in its natural habitat. In the background, other dinosaurs and lush vegetation characteristic of the Triassic era can be seen. At the top are the series name PREHISTORIC LIFE, the dinosaur’s name, the period in which it lived, and the issue year 2026. Along the rim, there is a timeline showing the three periods of the Mesozoic Era – Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous – together with their corresponding time spans, highlighting the educational character of the entire series.
