Great Southern Land Silver Coin 1 oz Silver 2026 Opal Proof
The Great Southern Land Silver Coin 1 oz Silver 2026 Opal Proof is a collector’s issue from The Perth Mint showcasing the extraordinary world of Australia’s nocturnal fauna. The coin is struck from 1 troy ounce of 999.9 fine silver in Proof standard. The central feature of the design is a striking natural opal insert shaped like the Australian continent.
Great Southern Land – Australia’s nocturnal wildlife
Australia is home to hundreds of thousands of animal species, many of which occur naturally nowhere else in the world. The Great Southern Land 2026 issue highlights creatures that are active after dark. The natural opal captivates with its iridescent play of colour, and because each stone has its own unique patterns and colouring, individual coins may vary in appearance. The coin has a face value of 1 AUD, weighs a minimum of 31.107 g, and its maximum mintage is 5,000 pieces.
Obverse and reverse of the coin
The obverse features the official portrait of King Charles III by Dan Thorne. The monarch’s likeness is accompanied by inscriptions and the coin’s face value of 1 Australian dollar.
The reverse, designed by Aleysha Howarth, depicts Australia’s nocturnal fauna, including a koala, spotted cuscus, gecko, night parrot, bat, and moth. The composition is complemented by the moon, stars, and native flora. The animals surround a natural opal insert in the shape of Australia, while the design is completed by the “P” mintmark, the year 2026, and the weight and silver fineness specifications.
