The Big Five III: Buffalo 1 oz Silver 2026 is another issue in the highly regarded Big Five III series produced by the South African Mint. The collection features the five most recognizable animals of African wildlife – the elephant, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros, and leopard – known as the “Big Five of Africa.”

The coin was struck from 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, has a diameter of 38.73 mm, and a face value of 5 Rand. The piece is offered in its original card packaging (blister card), which protects the coin and highlights its collectible character. The African buffalo is one of the most distinctive inhabitants of the savanna. This powerful and resilient animal lives in herds, and its massive build and impressive horns make it one of the symbols of wild Africa.

Obverse and reverse of the coin

Obverse depicts a full-body image of an adult buffalo in its natural habitat. The design is complemented by the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA”, “BIG FIVE 2026”, and the coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa.

Reverse shows two halves of a buffalo’s head forming the characteristic composition of the Big Five III series. When two coins are placed side by side appropriately, a full portrait of the animal is created. In the center are the inscriptions “FIVE RAND”, “1 OZ”, and “Ag 999”.
