The coin depicts the dragon, the 5th animal of the 12 animals that are representatives of the Chinese lunar calendar.The year 2024 belongs to the dragon and in Chinese mythology it is a majestic beast that inhabits rivers, lakes, oceans and roams the sky. The Chinese zodiac sign of the dragon falls in the years: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024. The coin was struck in copper and nickel alloy, weighing 15.37 grams and with a diameter of 31.51 mm. A distinctive feature of the coin is the rim, which has fourteen angles. The coin has an unlimited mintage. The renowned mint, The Royal Australian Mint, is responsible for the production of the coin. The product is guaranteed by the Australian Government and is full legal tender in the issuing country. The product is housed in the original card.

The Averse of the coin is decorated with an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The whole is surrounded by the inscription "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA". On the obverse is information on the year of minting of the coin.

Rewers depict the figure of a dragon. The reverse bears the inscription "YEAR OF THE DRAGON", and a Chinese mark. The designer of the reverse was E.Waterford.
