Australian beak (Platypus) 1 Platinum Ounce "Beak (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) - a semi-aquatic lifestyle endemic to the eastern states of Australia (including Tasmania), a species of mammal in the steak group, the only egg-laying members of this cluster. It is the last extant representative of its genus and family, although fossils of numerous representatives of these taxa have been found. It has many unusual features for a mammal: it lays eggs, secretes venom and has a beak. Seeing it for the first time, European naturalists were very confused, some even thought they were dealing with a well-crafted hoax. It belongs to several venomous mammals. The male has spurs on its hind feet that secrete venom capable of causing severe pain to humans. The beak's unique characteristics make it an important object of study in evolutionary biology and make it an icon of Australia. It has been chosen as the mascot of national events and is also depicted on the reverse of the Australian 20-cent coin. It is also the animal symbol of New South Wales. Until the early 20th century, it was hunted for its fur, but is now protected throughout its range. Although captive breeding programmes have had very limited success and the platypus is sensitive to environmental pollution, it is not in immediate danger of extinction."

This coin is an ideal alternative to traditional gold and silver due to the fact that the annual production of platinum is only 160 tonnes, meaning that at this point, demand is far outstripping supply. In addition, platinum is a much more durable raw material than gold or silver, which means that coins held for investment purposes will remain completely intact for longer. As an interesting side note, 'the largest producer of platinum in the world is South Africa, where 140 000 kg of this raw material was mined in 2009. The second largest producer in the world in mining production is Russia with 20 000 kg in 2009."
