Perth Mint: Australian Nugget 1 oz Gold 1987 Proof
Perth Mint: Australian Nugget 1 oz Gold 1987 Proof is the very first collector’s coin in the iconic Australian Nugget gold series, marking the beginning of a new era in the country’s numismatic history. The reverse features a depiction of the famous gold nugget named “Poseidon”, discovered in 1906 in Western Australia. This historical nugget, labeled “POSEIDON” on the coin, is one of the largest and most recognizable gold finds in Australia’s history. The coin is struck in 999.9 fine gold, weighs 1 troy ounce, and has a diameter of 32.10 mm. Its limited mintage makes it highly sought after by both collectors and investors worldwide. It carries a legal tender face value of 100 Australian dollars. The Poseidon nugget design pays tribute to Australia’s rich gold rush heritage and the pioneering spirit of early prospectors. The 1987 issue is particularly valued for its historical importance as the first proof edition in the series. Obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, surrounded by inscriptions of her name, title, country, and face value. Reverse shows the shape of the “Poseidon” gold nugget from 1906, along with the label “POSEIDON”, as well as inscriptions indicating the weight, purity, coin name, and year of issue. Note: Coin is sold without certificate or presentation case.
