Perth Mint: 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget 1/4 oz Gold 2026 Proof
Perth Mint: 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget is a prestigious gold collector coin struck from 1/4 oz of pure 9999 gold, issued in 2026 by The Perth Mint. This release commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget program, the first legal tender gold coin program produced by the Australian mint since 1931.
The Australian Nugget series debuted in 1986 and from the very beginning stood out for its artistic approach to the theme of the Australian gold rush. Designs by the world-renowned goldsmith and numismatic designer Stuart Devlin depicted historic gold nuggets discovered in Australia, combining investment value with refined artistic form.
The coin is struck in the Proof standard using the highest quality gold and has a face value of 25 Australian dollars. Its total weight is 7.777 g, diameter 20.6 mm, and maximum thickness 2.3 mm. The mintage is exceptionally low – a maximum of 605 pieces, with the issue limit restricted to just 500 examples, making this coin a highly sought-after collector item.
The obverse of the coin features the official effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne, together with the face value, presented in the classical style characteristic of contemporary The Perth Mint issues.
The reverse depicts the legendary Welcome Stranger nugget, the largest gold nugget ever discovered, found in 1869 in the state of Victoria. The motif is surrounded by an outlined map of Australia and a ring of stylised sun rays. The composition includes the name of the nugget, the P40 mintmark, the inscription THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET, as well as details of the weight, gold fineness and the year of issue 2026.
