Orca (Orca Whale) 1 Ounce Silver
A species of mammal in the dolphin family (Delphinidae). A large, characteristically coloured animal with a strongly developed dorsal fin (especially in males, in which it reaches 1.8 m) and long, rounded, paddle-shaped pectoral fins (in males the fin area is much larger - so it shows strong sexual dimorphism). The largest representative of the dolphins, the only member of the genus Orcinus. Back black, only a white spot behind the eye and a whitish spot behind the dorsal fin. Underside of body white, combined with a white patch on the side. In the upper and lower dentition, they have 10-12 pairs each of pointed teeth slightly curved backwards. Since 1965, orcas can be seen in dolphinariums and marine parks. More than 200 of these cetaceans living in the wild have already been captured for this purpose. Since 1984 there has been no need to hunt orcas living in the wild, as younger, successive generations of orcas are born in captivity. Critics are of the opinion that the small pool in the dolphinarium is not able to replace the animals' natural habitat. Most of the orcas living in captivity suffer from various diseases. A common occurrence in captive orcas is a crooked dorsal fin. This is because the dorsal fin consists of pure tissue, not supported by bone. If the animal is constantly in the same environment, without much difference in temperature and pressure, constantly on the surface of the water (where the fin is more strongly influenced by gravity) and when, due to lack of space, it keeps swimming in circles, the tissue becomes flaccid, deformed or atrophied. Another disturbing phenomenon often observed in captive orcas is the constant flapping of the hind fin against the water surface - a sign of deep dissatisfaction."
The obverse as with every Canadian coin is decorated with an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the coin is minted with a mirror stamp and therefore lacks the radial lines in the coin's background.
Rewers represents two orca individuals in their natural environment-one underwater, the other while emerging.
