The film premiered in 1982 and tells the story of a visitor from another planet who comes to Earth and befriends human child Elliott. In 2022, the film celebrates 40. anniversary of the screen adaptation.

The currency was minted from pure Ag bullion.999, weighing two troy ounces and measuring 57.50 x 60.00 mm. The shape of the coin is reminiscent of one of the most important scenes from the film, presenting Elliott with E.T.'im in a basket on a bicycle. The copy has individual original packaging.

Obverse the silver coin is decorated with the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II and the coat of arms of Niue, along with information about the face value, year of minting, weight and purity of the bullion. The designer of the obverse was Ian Rank-Broadley.
