The coin is minted from 40mm diameter Copperplate, commissioned by the New Zealand Post. Furthermore, the coin has a limited mintage of only 750 pieces. Importantly, each piece is supplied in an exclusive case.
The obverse of the coin is decorated with the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a crown. The obverse features information on the date of issue, country of issue. The designer of the obverse was Ian Rank-Broadley.
Rewers depict a coloured Hairy Maclary dog. The reverse also bears the inscription "OUT OF THE GATE AND OFF FOR A WALK WENT HAIRY MACLARY FROM DONALDSON'S DAIRY", "LYNLEY DODD" and the face value of the coin.
