National Historical Park: Cumberland Gap 5 oz Silver
National Parks of America: Cumberland Pass (Cumberland Gap National Historical Park) 5 Ounce Silver " The Cumberland Pass (Cumberland Gap) is a national historic park. Cumberland Gap) is a pass located 488 metres above sea level in the Cumberland range of the main Appalachian ridge. It played an important role in the history of North American settlement, serving as a major pass through the central Appalachians as part of the Wilderness Way. Long used by Indians, it became accessible to westward-moving settlers when the famous trapper Daniel Boone and a group of thirty-odd lumberjacks widened it enough to make it accessible to hikers and horseback riders on the trail from Kentucky to Tennessee. Widened a little later, it could also be traversed by two-wheeled vehicles. Cumberland Pass is located north of the point where the state boundaries of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia converge. The nearby town of Cumberland Gap takes its name from the pass. The pass was formed by a south-flowing prehistoric stream, which took place during the uplift of the massif. As the mountain range rose further the creek changed direction flowing into the Cumberland River to the north. The pass had been used for thousands of years by Indians and herds of migrating animals. " The United States Mint opened in 1792 , and its first director was the renowned scientist David Rittenhouse (1792-1795 ). The mint was established as a response to the unstable monetary rates occurring at the time-people realised the importance of stability in circulation. Today, the mint is one of the most prestigious mints in the world. In recent times, production has fluctuated between 4 and 10 billion coins per year, making the American Eagle coins already known all over the world. The United States Mint operates in six cities across the country: the headquarters is in Washington DC , the treasury in Fort Knox , and production centres in Philadelphia , West Point , Denver and San Francisco .
