Lunar: Year of the Monkey 1 oz Gold UK 2016
Year of the Monkey (Year of the Monkey) 1 Gold Ounce UK "Great apes are found in the Americas and are called New World monkeys. Modern-day great apes are known from Asia and Africa, and formerly were also found in Europe (currently only the magot lives in Gibraltar) - they are called Old World apes. Most apes live in herds or family groups with an extensive social structure. Monogamous species also occur. Often the herd is led by the most powerful male. Females have a 4-week menstrual cycle, with no seasonality of birth. The female usually gives birth to one young, which stays with the mother for a long time, holding on tightly with her limbs. These include animals of widely varying sizes, from the pygmy (Cebuella (Callithrix) pygmaea), smaller than the common squirrel, to the gorilla, larger than man. Species that live mainly in trees have slender and graceful bodies; others, terrestrial or arboreal, are stocky and massive.''This year's coin (previous coins in the series: Year of the Horse and Year of the Sheep), featuring an image of a monkey, the 9th animal in the Chinese calendar, was designed by Wuon- Gean Ho, whose cultural heritage makes him the ideal artist to convey the meeting of eastern and western cultures. The artist has created a beautiful and dynamic design that showcases the energy, agility and intelligence of the monkey.
