Literal: American Bison 1 ounce of gold 2026If referring to the coin’s common name: American Buffalo 1 oz Gold 2026
The American Buffalo gold coin is a coin issued by the United States Mint (West Point facility) that was struck from 24-karat gold. This investment product was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 2005 and has been continuously produced since 2006. Moreover, it carries the guarantee of the U.S. government and is legal tender within the issuing country.
The American Buffalo is struck in a one-ounce weight with an unlimited mintage. It is also a coin that has been gaining popularity year after year not only in the United States but also beyond its borders. Interestingly, in addition to the bullion version, collector editions (American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin) are also sold, which include certificates of authenticity issued by the mint.
Obverse features a Native American, which Fraser said was created as a composite of the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes—Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The obverse also bears the motto "Liberty" in the upper right corner, the year of issue at the lower left, and below it the letter "F" from Fraser’s surname.
On the reverse, a bison (often referred to as a buffalo) stands atop a mound. Most people believe that the animal depicted on the reverse is a bison named Black Diamond, which lived at the New York Central Park Zoo in 1910. On the reverse we can also see the American motto "In God We Trust" (We Trust God) and "E pluribus unum" (Lat. Out of many, one), as well as the coin’s denomination ($50).
