Liberty Head $10 Gold 1903
The 1903 Liberty Head $10 Gold Coin, also known as the “Eagle”, is a classic American gold coin designed by Christian Gobrecht. Coins from this year were minted in three locations: Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (“O”), and San Francisco (“S”). The 1903 edition is notable because pieces from New Orleans and especially San Francisco are highly valued today – with the San Francisco issues being scarcer compared to other years. The coin contains nearly half an ounce of pure gold (.900 fine) and was widely circulated in the early 20th century as part of the U.S. monetary system.
Obverse depicts the head of Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY”, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original states, with the date below.
Reverse shows a bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. Above the eagle appears the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”, encircled by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “TEN D.”.
