Liberty Head $10 Gold 1901
The 1901 Liberty Head $10 Gold Coin, also known as the “Eagle”, is a prized American gold coin designed by Christian Gobrecht. Coins from 1901 were minted in Philadelphia (no mintmark), Denver (“D”), and San Francisco (“S”). This year is notable as one of the last with production in all three mints, making it a key target for collectors. Containing nearly half an ounce of pure gold (.900 fine), this coin played a vital role in the U.S. monetary system of the early 20th century.
Obverse features the head of Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY”, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original states, with the year of issue below.
Reverse shows a bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. Above the eagle is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”, with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN D.” encircling the design.
