Liberty Head $10 Gold 1898
Liberty Head $10 Gold 1898, also known as the „Eagle”, is a prestigious American gold coin designed by Christian Gobrecht. Struck at the mints in Philadelphia (without a mintmark) and San Francisco (with the „S” mintmark), it is an important part of the late 19th-century monetary system of the United States. This coin was widely used both in daily circulation and during the period of rapid economic growth in America. It contains nearly half an ounce of pure gold (.900 fineness), and its classic design influenced subsequent American gold coin issues.
Obverse features the head of Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a crown inscribed with „LIBERTY”, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original U.S. states and the year of mintage at the bottom.
Reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest. Above the eagle is the motto „IN GOD WE TRUST”, with the inscription „UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination „TEN D.” around it.
