Liberty Head $10 Gold 1897
The Liberty Head $10 Gold Coin of 1897, also known as the “Eagle,” is a classic American gold coin designed by Christian Gobrecht. It was minted in the Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans (O), and San Francisco (S) mints and is one of the most recognizable numismatic items from the late 19th century. The 1897 pieces are among the last strikes of this prestigious series, which was widely used both in daily circulation and during the Gold Rush. The coin contains nearly half an ounce of pure gold, and its timeless design has inspired many later American gold coin issues.
Obverse depicts the classic portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a crown inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars and the year of issue.
Reverse shows an eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN D.”.
