Rhodium Sponge 50 grams Rhodium Sponge 50 grams Rhodium (Rh, Latin rhodium, from Gr. rhodon - rose) - a chemical element from the group of transition metals in the periodic table (the triad of light platinum), a precious metal. The element was discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston in London. In the Earth's crust it is found in trace amounts of the order of 10-4 ppm. It is obtained from some copper and nickel ores, in which about 0.1% of the element is present. Rhodium has 34 isotopes in the mass range 94-112. Only isotope 103 is stable, which represents 100% of the natural isotopic composition of this element.Rhodium carbonyl, chloride and fluoride complexes are used in industry as catalysts in the polymerisation of polyethylene and in the metathesis of olefins.Biological significance - none. Carbonyl complexes are toxic and possibly carcinogenic. In its pure form, it is a shiny, silvery-grey metal. It does not react with water, air or acids, but does react with strong bases. It is used to make crucibles, surgical instruments and reflective coatings in headlamps; due to its high price, it is rarely used in metallic form.
