Kiwi 2014 1 Ounce Silver "Kiwi - a species of bird that inhabits only New Zealand. It is a species characterised by the absence of a tail and a very long beak. Modern-day representatives of the group feed on both invertebrates and plant food. They lead a nocturnal lifestyle. They lay one to two eggs, which are laid for 75 to 80 days by the male, who also takes care of the young (he behaves in a similar way to a domestic hen, i.e. points out places to forage, digs up the litter, etc.). They take a long time to mature, at least two years. Despite their gentle appearance, they can attack an intruder in their territory, even with their claws. This rarely happens, as they announce their presence with loud cries. When they sleep, they keep their head against their vestigial wing. The population decline is about 5% per year. It is being destroyed by mammals brought here by man."
