Australian symbolism and jewellery craftsmanship
The redback spider, one of Australia’s most distinctive spiders, symbolizes resilience, instinct, and the ability to survive in a demanding environment. The coin contains 2 troy ounces of Au 999.9 fine gold and weighs a minimum of 62.213 g. Additional elements – a spider weighing 4.8 g and a web weighing 3 g – are made of 18-carat gold. The total pure gold content of the entire piece amounts to approximately 68.05 g.
Diamonds, ruby, and a limited mintage of 60 pieces
The spider is plated with black rhodium and decorated with black diamonds with a total weight of approx. 1.00 ct and a ruby of approx. 0.17 ct. The piece has a face value of 200 AUD, a diameter of up to 40.90 mm, and a thickness of up to 12.50 mm. The whole presentation is housed in a specially designed acrylic display case inspired by the spider’s natural habitat, along with elegant packaging. Each example is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
Obverse and reverse of the coin
Obverse features the effigy of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne. The composition is complemented by information regarding the coin’s weight, metal fineness, and face value.
Reverse, designed by Ing Ing Jong, depicts a three-dimensional redback spider in 18-carat gold on a tangled web. The characteristic red marking on the abdomen is highlighted by a ruby, while the spider’s body is adorned with black diamonds. In the background, a windmill, a fence, and an arid Australian landscape can be seen, while the design is completed by the inscription “THE JEWELLED REDBACK SPIDER 2026” and The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark.
